Make South Preston Shopping Centre safe again

The recent redevelopment of the South Preston Shopping Centre and surrounds has led to a large increase in car traffic in our neighbourhood. 

Residents are concerned about the risk of traffic accidents in the South Preston Shopping Centre, due to grossly inadequate pedestrian and cyclist access. 

Currently, there is only one little used and inconvenient pedestrian access point on Plenty Road.  Cyclists and pedestrians are forced to share the narrow entry points on Dundas Street and Milton Crescent with cars. 

And, someone forgot to create a useable path between the new ALDI supermarket and the Safeways! The only current way to walk between these two supermarkets and to access the smaller shops from ALDI is to scramble across an albeit, low earth embankment and scurry across the ALDI truck loading bay. 

Whilst residents appreciate that efforts to redevelop the site are continuing, we have been alarmed by the responses of Council officers to our requests for safer pedestrian and cyclist access to the Shopping Centre, which have basically been: 'it's too late', and 'why can't you just walk around to the Plenty Road foot entrance' (requiring a further hike around two corners!)

But with the successful motion to Council on Monday 19th September, which will require Council officers to negotiate a solution with the management and developers of the South Preston Shopping Centre, we're hoping for some good news.

Sign onto this petition to let the Councillors know we appreciate their efforts and what is required for a safe, sensible solution. (And while we're at it, let's try and get the toilet block opened again too!) 

 

Dear Mayor and Councillors, Darebin City Council ,

Residents appreciate the Councillors' efforts to draw this dangerous situation to the attention of the developers and management of the South Preston Shopping Centre, as per the successful Council motion on Monday 19th September.

We, the under-signed residents of Darebin, request that the following requirements are emphasized by Council in its negotiations:

The creation of safe cyclist and pedestrian accesses at both Dundas Street and Milton Crescent, comprising of footpaths and bike lanes.

Safe and direct foot access between ALDI and Safeways.

Extra bike racks.

Re-open the public toilet block next to Safeways.
